Your Key to Exploring the Roof of the World
The Tibet Travel Permit, also known as the Tibet Entry Permit or Tibet Visa, is a mandatory document for all international travelers planning to visit Tibet. Without this permit, you will not be allowed to board a train or flight to Lhasa. To obtain the permit, you must pre-arrange your travel itinerary through a licensed Tibetan travel agency, such as Guidetibet, before your arrival. Independent travel in Tibet is not permitted, so all arrangements must be made in advance through an authorized agency.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Foreign tourists who wish to travel across the entire Tibet Autonomous Region must obtain three essential permits:
- the Tibet Entry Permit (TTB),
- the Alien’s Travel Permit (PSB), and
- the Military Permit & Foreign Affairs Permit
Other Permits: Alien's Travel Permit & Military Permit
With a Tibet Travel Permit (TTB), you can enter Tibet and explore Lhasa and its surrounding areas. However, if you plan to travel further to destinations like Mount Everest, Shigatse, or other regional capitals, you will need an additional Alien’s Travel Permit (PSB). This permit is issued by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) and can usually be applied for once you arrive in Lhasa. Your guide will assist you in obtaining this permit, which may take about an hour or so in cities like Shigatse.
For sensitive border areas, such as Mount Kailash, a Military Permit is also required.
Permit Processing Time with Guidetibet
- Tibet Travel Permit (TTB): Allow at least 10 working days for processing.
- Military Permit: Requires approximately 30 working days for arrangements.

Military Permit & Foreign Affairs Permit
